From PBS Thirteen/WNET New York's acclaimed "Stage on Screen" series, eight of Nobel Prize-winning writer Samual Beckett's plays are presented in a showcase of filmed versions; each created for this series, and far more than filmed stage performances. Imaginatively translated are "Catastrophe", "Ohio Impromptu", "Come and Go", "Breath", "Play", "Act Without Words II", "What Were", and masterpiece, "Waiting for Godot". Part of a 19-piece historic project bringing Beckett’s work to screen, talents in film and TV—incl. Sir John Gielgud, Kristin Scott Thomas, Alan Rickman, and Harold Pinter—participated in this cinematic look of a quintessential man of theatre. Jeremy Irons stars in one play and hosts the program, providing commentary and background on his life/work, fascinating behind-the-scenes footage, and conversations with the actors/directors. It received a 62nd Peabody Award in 2002 for its fascinating exploration, keen analysis, and brilliant realization of Samuel Beckett's work.
